- What is KINGDOM HISTORICAL TRUST, INC. (KHTI, aka The Land Fund)?
The KHTI’s main purpose is to provide rentable event sites to historical re-enactment and related groups within California. Our primary event site is centrally located at the Yosemite foothills, between the cities of Merced and Mariposa, off of Route 140.
The KHTI was incorporated in the State of California in 1993 as a 501(c)3 non-profit foundation with the original goal of raising money for purchasing and improving land for use by medieval re-creation groups. We were able to purchase our primary site in 2016, and have been shifting our focus from exclusively fundraising with the goal of purchasing land parcels, to the development of our primary site, as a rental property for historical re-enactment events by our local communities, as our primary focus. The solicitation and management of these assets is overseen by a Board of Directors, who are known formally and collectively as Kingdom Historical Trust, Inc. or KHTI. However, we still call ourselves the Land Fund; that’s what we are.
For legal reasons, as we will describe, the KHTI is the immediate descendant of the “West Kingdom Land Fund” which was started in the early 1970’s, in what became the Society for Creative Anachronism, or as it is more commonly known as the “SCA”, Inc. The KHTI was eventually formed to place a legal corporate separation between the SCA, Inc. and land ownership, and to provide more local control of the Land Fund. By having this “space” we gain some protection. If the SCA is sued, only the SCA’s assets can be attached. If KHTI is sued, only KHTI’s assets can be taken. The KHTI and the SCA have a very close relationship, with clear boundaries, to keep the two entities clear and separate in the eyes of the Law. While the KHTI has a very close relationship with the SCA, we welcome site rentals from any of the related communities or anyone who is interested in renting a lovely property for some time in the future!
- Are donations to KHTI tax-deductible?
We are a federally recognized 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation and cash donations to KHTI are deductible in full on Federal and CA income taxes subject to the usual regulations. Donations of prizes and auction items are also deductible. However, the money you spend at auction or to obtain prizes is only deductible in amounts over the value of the items obtained. - Is KHTI part of the SCA, Inc.?
No, we are a separate non-profit corporation. - Is KHTI part of the Kingdom of the West?
No. It is not part of the West Kingdom in terms of the organization of the SCA, Inc. However, it is run by members of the SCA as a separate legal entity to benefit the West Kingdom and adjoining Kingdoms like Caid, An-Tir, Atenveldt, and Artemesia and largely draws its support from the populace of the West. Neither the SCA, Inc. or any of the other Kingdoms have any claim on the money collected and managed by KHTI. - What is the purpose of KHTI?

213 baldwin ave, roseville ca 95678 (Updated March 2023) - I am so happy that the West Kingdom was finally able to buy land. Since I was part of the donors, when can I move in to homestead on the land?
Sadly, the zoning of the land, and our “Conditional Use Permit” do not permit us to have people living on the land for a sustained period of time, without a specifically permitted dwelling as approved by Mariposa Department of Planning. While we would love to see small medieval themed “Tiny home” style sheds and trailers develop at the land over the years ahead, these would need to be under 120 sq feet (10×12) or smaller, and while they would make great long term storage, they would not be able to be used for extended stays other than during rental periods with an associated event. Much in the same way that people have extensive setups that are stored at Pennsic, but they are only allowed to use them during the actual dates of the annual Pennsic war… - I have a different question. Who can answer it for me?
