Why the Ducal Prize Tournament—and Fundraising—Still Matter
Traditionally held around Labor Day, the Ducal Prize Tournament has long been a cherished annual event, co-hosted by the Society for Creative Anachronism (SCA) and the Kingdom Historical Trust, Inc. (KHTI). Renowned for its lively atmosphere and legendary shopping opportunities, the event has drawn fun-seekers and eagle-eyed treasure hunters alike for decades.
For over 40 years, the primary purpose of this event was to raise funds toward the dream of securing a permanent event site—a war chest built one prize at a time. In 2016, that dream became a reality when KHTI successfully purchased a stunning 120-acre property in the Yosemite foothills.
So… now that the land is ours, do we still need to fundraise?
Yes—we absolutely do.
While the major purchase has been made, the fundraising need has not ended. The remaining funds are carefully earmarked to cover ongoing, essential expenses like property taxes and basic operational costs. To ensure the long-term sustainability and continued development of the site, events like the Ducal Prize remain vital—and will likely continue for years to come.
It’s true that the SCA community has been the cornerstone of our funding efforts through generous donations. However, since acquiring the property, we’ve worked to diversify our revenue sources. One example: leasing grazing rights to local ranchers during off-seasons. This modest agreement not only helps offset taxes but also keeps the perimeter fencing maintained—ensuring that the site remains functional and secure year-round.
Looking Ahead
Our vision is to see the site used regularly by local groups, reenactment societies, and the SCA at large. We’re actively developing the infrastructure to support larger events—including the potential for a multi-Kingdom war. But to get there, we need your continued support.
Planned Projects Needing Funding:
-
Extension of the water system into the Lower Meadow, potentially with an additional storage tank
-
Further road development to improve access for standard passenger vehicles
-
Construction of one or more covered pavilions for inclement weather gatherings and courts
-
Creation of semi-permanent structures in a medieval village area, including communal ovens, a forge, and performance spaces
-
Development of secure long-term storage for trailers and large equipment
-
Establishment of rentable encampments and event accessories
-
Dedicated equestrian and archery zones with appropriate facilities
-
Installation of a “Grove of the Ancestors”, a memorial area honoring those who have supported and shaped KHTI through the years
Your continued involvement—whether through attending Ducal Prize, making a donation, or spreading the word—helps bring this vision to life. Thank you for being part of this journey.
